Introduction to Agriculture

Introduction to Agriculture explores the basic concepts and techniques used in the agriculture industry. Subjects include forestry, leadership development, horticulture, animal sciences, tractor driving, wildlife management, food science, woods, and welding. This is a hands-on class where students will use the greenhouse, welding and wood shop, classroom laboratories, and other means of learning to explore agriculture and the world around them while building life skills.

Environmental Science / Natural Resources

Environmental Science / Natural Resources helps students develop an awareness of principles, practices, and issues related to the management of natural resources. The subjects covered in this course includes soils, forestry, scientific inquiry, wildlife habitats and management, water quality, plants and a vast array of subjects that pertain to the world we live in. The class will also incorporate many hands-on activities such as hatching and releasing salmon and/or rainbow trout.

Horticulture

Horticulture is a course designed to directly involve students in the growing, managing, marketing, and selling of greenhouse crops such as common houseplants, annuals, perennials, and vegetable plants. In the fall, students will learn fundamental skills related to plant propagation, plant nutrition, and greenhouse production. As we move into the winter months, the class will be designing and planting flower baskets. Students will then put their knowledge to work in the spring as they manage the daily operations of the greenhouse. Additional subjects that will be covered include floral and landscape design.

Agricultural Leadership Development

Through the Agricultural Leadership Development course, students will build upon the skills required for success in college and a career such as organization, communication, self-confidence, professionalism, etc. The class will closely work with the development of the FFA chapter focusing on goal setting, officer teams, publicity, sales presentations, and event planning. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a leadership development camp.

Animal Sciences

Animal Sciences introduces students to principles, practices, and issues related to raising and caring for animals. The course will focus on proper care, feeding and nutrition, health management, reproduction and genetics, and anatomy of modern livestock, poultry, and equine. By the end of the course, students will have gained skills necessary for raising animals and showing at fair.

Veterinary Science

The Veterinary Sciences class is designed for the advanced study of animal sciences and veterinary medicine. Students will examine the parallels between animal science and human biology in addition to learning vocabulary, operating techniques, diseases and parasites, physiology, and more. During the course students will also have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers regarding how to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Woods

The Woodshop course is designed to teach basic carpentry and shop skills. The course will include hands-on instruction in shop safety, hand and power tool operation, project design, and the completion of several projects. Projects include a tool box, name plaque, wooden pen, picture frame, and more.

Agriculture Mechanics

Agriculture Mechanics introduces students to the basic concepts and techniques used in the fields of agriculture mechanics and construction. Through hands-on instruction, students will gain skills and complete projects in welding and metallurgy, surveying, drafting, concrete construction, electrical wiring, and small engines basics.
